Variations of the Test
IELTS – Two variants: Academic – For students planning for higher studies such as Undergraduate, Master, Doctoral, etc. General Training – For job seekers and immigrants to English-speaking countries.
TOEFL – Only one test, no variation.
It is mandatory for Indian / Non-English speaking country students to either take IELTS or TOEFL for getting a student VISA
How are the tests conducted?
IELTS is jointly owned by Cambridge English Language Assessment; IDP Education, Australia; and British Council, UK. In India, it is conducted by IDP IELTS, Australia.
It can be taken on paper (pen & paper) or on the computer at the official test center. Speaking test in both formats is conducted face-to-face by the IELTS examiner.
Test duration – 2 hours 45 minutes.
TOEFL is administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), USA.
It can be taken at test centers or at home with the TOEFL iBT home edition.

Test Structure
How are the tests scored?
IELTS – is scored on 0-9 Band with 9 being the highest. It is the average of the Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking section scores.
TOEFL – is scored out of 120 points. Each section – Reading, Listening, Writing, and speaking has a maximum score of 30.
Both IELTS and TOEFL scores remain valid for 2 years from the date of testing.

What is an acceptable score?
IELTS – Scores above 7 are considered good. Most universities accept a 6.5 cutoff.
TOEFL – Scores above 95 are considered good. Most universities accept a 90 cutoff.
