The University of Nottingham (Nottingham University) is a public research university in Nottingham, United Kingdom. It was founded as University College Nottingham in 1881. The institution received its Royal Charter in 1903, which gave it university status and the authority to award degrees. Nottingham University comes under the alliance of The Russell Group, which promotes research in all its associated universities. Nottingham University and Sutton Bonington’s Midlands Agricultural and Dairy College combined in the 1940s to form the School of Agriculture, and the Portland Building was finished in 1956 to go with the Trent Building.
The institution founded the first brand-new medical school in the United Kingdom in the 20th century in 1970. On the former site of the Raleigh Bicycle Company, one mile (1.6 km) from the University Park Campus, Jubilee Campus opened its doors in 1999. Since then, Nottingham started to grow internationally, establishing campuses in Malaysia and China in 1999 and 2004 respectively. The King’s Meadow Campus, which is next to University Park, debuted in 2005.
Nottingham University has two major campuses –
The University Park Campus:
The 330-acre (1.3 km2) main campus of the University of Nottingham is located to the west of the city of Nottingham. University Park, with its lake, clock tower, and immense parkland vegetation, has garnered many accolades for its architecture and landscaping, and was recognised with a Green Flag Award for being the greenest campus in the nation.
The university’s public arts center and performance area, the Lakeside Arts Centre, is located in Highfields Park at the south entrance to the main campus. A variety of cultural facilities are housed in the D.H. Lawrence Pavilion, including a theater with seating for 225 people, a number of craft cabinets, the Weston Gallery (which showcases the university’s manuscript collection), the Wallner gallery, which serves as a platform for local and regional artists, and a number of visual arts, performance, and hospitality spaces.
Jubilee Campus:
Jubilee Campus, created by Sir Michael Hopkins, is about a mile (1.6 km) from University Park and was inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II in 1999. The Schools of Education and Computer Science, as well as The Nottingham University Business School, are housed at the campus’ facilities. The National College for School Leadership is also housed there.
The Jubilee Campus received the Energy Globe Award in 2005. The campus stands out for its cutting-edge and distinctive architecture, which culminates in the 60-meter-tall artistic building Aspire, which is the tallest freestanding structure in the UK.
Nottingham University has five Academic Faculties –
Faculty of Humanities (comprises of 16 departments)
Faculty of Engineering (comprises of 6 departments
Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (comprises of 4 departments)
Faculty of Science (comprises of 8 departments)
Faculty of Social Sciences (comprises of 7 departments)
REQUIREMENTS
To apply for a full-time undergraduate programme at Nottingham University, students first need to make an online application via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service – UCAS.
General Academic Requirements for International students include:
BOARD TYPE | ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS |
CBSE or CISCE – Indian Higher Secondary Certificates, Class XII | Students must score 93% overall across five subjects |
Indian State Boards – Higher Secondary Examination, Class XII ( Please check the exact requirements applicable for your Board from the University Website) | Students must score 84-98% overall across five subjects |
International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum | Must score overall scores of 38-42, with scores of 6-7 in relevant subjects at higher level. |
A-Levels | Applicants are expected to have studied three subjects at A level. All conditional offers will be made based on three full A levels and students will only be required to have achieved a pass in the fourth subject, if taken. The grade achieved in the fourth subject may have significance when an applicant has narrowly failed to achieve the specified grades at A level. |
Other Requirements:
A) Entrance Tests – While the University of Nottingham generally does not require admission tests for most undergraduate degrees, specific healthcare and clinical programs are notable exceptions. For the 2026/2027 entry cycles, the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) has become the mandatory standard for all Medicine (A100/A10L) applicants, replacing previous assessment models. Applicants interested in Veterinary Medicine should be aware that requirements can vary, often involving the UCAT, the NSAA, or the university's own bespoke internal assessments depending on the specific pathway. To ensure your application remains competitive and technically valid, it is safest to assume that entrance tests are primarily required for Medicine (UCAT). Always cross-reference the specific course page for Veterinary or Dental studies to confirm which specialized assessment is currently in effect, as these requirements are subject to annual review by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
For the 2027 entry cycle (applications starting from October 2026), the University of Nottingham exclusively requires the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) for all medical applicants. Crucially, the university does not use a simple "cutoff" score. Instead, they employ a transparent scoring system that combines your eight best GCSE grades with your UCAT subtest scores. Under this new model, Nottingham double-weights the Verbal Reasoning (VR) section of the UCAT, as internal research identifies this subtest as the strongest predictor of clinical success. Furthermore, any applicant achieving a Band 4 in the Situational Judgement Test (SJT) is automatically rejected, regardless of how high their cognitive score may be..
B) Statement of Purpose (SOP) – It is a very important part of UCAS Application. It helps the Nottingham University admission committee get an insight into who you are and whether you’d be a good fit for the course you’re applying to. The SOP should cover the students’ career aspirations, how they developed an interest in their subject, any relevant work or research experience related to their subject and their plans. You can only submit one personal statement for the five courses and universities you have applied for.
C) Letter of Recommendation (LOR) – The reference letter(s) is/are usually provided by the teachers that have observed the student closely; it includes the aspects of the applicant’s growth trajectory in the subjects, accomplishments and interest shown, and any remarkable accomplishments highlighting their expertise in the field. Only one LOR is required for Nottingham University.
→ International students applying from the USA, have to appear for the AP Tests as a compulsory pre-requisite at Nottingham University. A minimum of 3 AP Tests where at least 4 grade in each is achieved, but some challenging courses may require additional AP Tests.
(To check the course specific requirements you must visit the specific subject page).
2027 Academic Entry Standards for International Students
Nottingham remains highly selective, requiring an IB Diploma score of 38–42 or AAA at A-level for its most competitive courses like Law, Engineering, and Pharmacy. For Indian students, the 2026 requirements for CBSE and CISCE (ISC) boards typically range between 84% and 93% overall across five subjects. While the university historically considered predicted grades, their 2026 admissions policy for Medicine has shifted: they now only "score" achieved GCSEs and UCAT results to decide who to interview, meaning predicted A-level grades no longer influence the initial shortlisting stage, provided they meet the minimum AAA threshold. For certain courses Nottingham University may require students to provide a sample of their written work (research paper) or art portfolio (you may check the specifications at the course page).
Accepted English Proficiency Tests by Nottingham University:
Nottingham University has three levels of English Proficiency Tests acceptance criteria. This depends upon the type of courses/subject a student has chosen to study in his/her Undergraduate Degree. For e.g. Level 1 includes courses like BSc Agriculture, Level 2 includes courses like BSc Economics & International Economics, and Level 3 would include courses like BA English Literature, and most of the Postgraduate courses. (For detailed information about each subject, kindly visit the course page).
TEST | Level 1 | Level 2 | Level 3 |
IELTS (Academic) | 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each element) | 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each element) | 7.0 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each element) |
Pearson Test of English (PTE) (Academic) | 65 (with a minimum of 59 in each element) | 71 (with a minimum of 65 in each element) | 76 (with a minimum of 65 in each element) |
TOEFL (iBT) | 79 (with a minimum of 17 in writing and listening, 18 in reading and 20 in speaking) | 90 (minimum 19 in writing and listening, 20 in reading and 22 in speaking) | 100 (minimum 19 in writing and listening, 20 in reading and 22 in speaking) |
Pro Tip 1: English Proficiency and the CBSE Waiver
The University of Nottingham offers a significant advantage to students from India and other English-medium backgrounds. For the 2026 intake, students who have achieved 70% or higher in English in their Class XII (CBSE or ISC) are often eligible for a full IELTS/TOEFL waiver, provided they apply within two years of graduation. For those required to take a test, the requirements are split into three levels, with most high-demand courses requiring an IELTS of 7.0 (with no element below 6.0). It is vital to check the specific "Level" of your course, as STEM subjects often accept a lower Level 1 or 2 (IELTS 6.0–6.5).
Pro Tip 2: Critical Deadlines and Professional Standards
Applicants must be mindful of the "dual-track" deadline system for 2027. While most undergraduate applications will be due by mid January, 2027, all Medicine and Veterinary Medicine applications must be submitted via UCAS by October 15, 2026. Beyond academics, Nottingham has a robust "Fitness to Practise" review. For courses in Medicine and Health Sciences, students are selected based on a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format held between December and February, where communication skills and ethical reasoning are tested through six distinct stations.
Nottingham University has three sports scholarship packages as well as a range of specialist options. Following is the eligibility criteria to apply for this scholarship –
