How to Get an International Degree in India: The 2027 Guide to Foreign Campuses

For decades, the dream of a globally recognised degree meant packing bags, navigating visa labyrinths, and spending crores on overseas tuition and living expenses. Indian students, nearly 900,000 of them in 2023 alone, flocked to traditional destinations like the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. But that paradigm is shifting—dramatically and irrevocably.

Today, a quiet revolution is unfolding across Indian soil. From the financial corridors of GIFT City in Gujarat to the tech hubs of Bengaluru and the educational zones of Mumbai, world-renowned universities are planting their flags. The message is clear: you no longer need to leave India to receive a world-class international education.

Why Global Universities Are Flocking to India

The influx is not accidental. It is the result of a perfect storm—rising global restrictions, evolving Indian policy, and an insatiable domestic demand for quality education.

The Push Factor Abroad: Traditional study destinations have become less welcoming. The US has proposed a staggering $100,000 H-1B petition fee, Canada slashed international student intake by 50%, and Australia raised its student visa fees to a prohibitive AU$2,000. The UK, too, has trimmed post-study work rights from 24 to 18 months. These changes have made studying abroad not just expensive, but uncertain.

The Pull Factor at Home: India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 explicitly encourages internationalisation. The University Grants Commission (UGC) now permits foreign universities ranked in the global top 500 to establish independent campuses with full autonomy. They can set their own fees, curricula, and admission criteria—without being bound by India’s reservation system.

One of the most significant, yet understated, advantages for high-achieving applicants is the Reservation-Free Admission Policy. Under UGC regulations, these international campuses operate with full autonomy over their selection criteria. Unlike traditional Indian institutions, they are not bound by domestic quota systems, ensuring a 100% merit-based environment that provides a predictable and transparent path for top-tier students.

For global institutions, India offers a compelling value proposition: the world’s largest English-speaking youth population, rising disposable incomes, and a massive demand-supply gap (over 43 million students but just over 1,200 universities).

The Vanguard: Who Has Arrived and Who Is Coming?

The first wave is already operational, and the second is gathering momentum. Here are the key players reshaping India’s higher education landscape:

Operational Campuses (Already Teaching Students)

  1. University of Southampton Delhi (Gurugram, Haryana) – A founding member of the Russell Group, Southampton offers identical UK degrees in Computer Science, Business Management, Economics, and Finance. Its "Triple Helix" model integrates education, research, and industry engagement, complete with Bloomberg-equipped financial laboratories.

It allows students appearing for Class 12 examinations from any board to apply for admission.

  1. Deakin University (GIFT City, Gujarat) – The first foreign university to establish operations in India (back in 1994), Deakin’s GIFT City campus now offers postgraduate programmes in Business Analytics and Cyber Security.

Students need to have a bachelor’s degree to apply to any course here. Depending on the course students have to submit personal statements, resumes and portfolios. This helps the university’s admissions team assess your application and learn more about you. Check the website to see whether your course requires it or not. Students need to apply through The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) portal.

  1. Queen’s University Belfast (GIFT City, Gujarat) – As the first Russell Group institution to open a campus in India, Queen’s offers five one-year MSc programmes in Finance, Business Analytics, and Public Policy, with PhD programmes planned.

Students should have a bachelor’s degree with a final average of 58% or above (where a UK 2:1 is required), or 53% (where a UK 2:2 is required).

  1. University of Wollongong (GIFT City, Gujarat) – Following its successful models in Dubai and Malaysia, Wollongong offers master’s degrees in Financial Technology and Data Analytics, connecting students to a global fintech network.

It requires students to have a strong academic record, along with meeting English language proficiency standards (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent).

What This Means for Indian Students

The arrival of these institutions is not merely about geography. It represents a fundamental upgrade in the options available to Indian learners.

1. Global Degrees at Local Costs

Studying at a UK or Australian campus can cost between INR 30-60 lakh annually just in tuition. The Indian counterparts are expected to charge between INR 8-20 lakh per year—a fraction of the cost. While still a premium over domestic colleges, this pricing opens international education to a vastly larger cohort.

2. Flexible Global Pathways

Many universities are offering "2+2" models, semester exchanges, and summer schools. You could start in GIFT City and finish in Coventry, or spend a year at the main campus in Belfast. This hybrid model provides global exposure without the full financial burden of an overseas degree.

3. World-Class Infrastructure and Faculty

These are not franchised operations. Illinois Tech is recruiting international faculty with visiting professors from Chicago. Southampton Delhi employs over 75 faculty members. Bristol is replicating its acclaimed "Enterprise Campus" model in Mumbai. Students can expect research labs, innovation hubs, and industry partnerships that rival the parent campuses.

4. A New Tier of Indian Higher Education

International campuses sit above traditional Indian universities but below the elite Ivy League price point. They compete directly with top private universities like Ashoka, Plaksha, and Jindal Global—raising the bar for every institution in the country.

5. Global Alumni Network

A common misconception is that these campuses are isolated satellites. In reality, students gain full access to the parent university’s global network. Whether you study in Delhi or Mumbai, you utilize the same career portals, digital libraries, and alumni chapters as students in London or Sydney. Your professional "currency" is the global brand, not a localized sub-brand.

Smart Considerations Before Applying

While the opportunities are immense, students and families should evaluate these campuses with a discerning eye:

  • Cost vs. Value: Deakin’s Master of Business Analytics costs approximately INR 22 lakh for the first year at GIFT City, versus INR 23.65 lakh in Australia—a modest saving. The real value lies in avoiding living costs and visa hassles, not necessarily slashing tuition.

  • Scholarships Are Available: The University of Wollongong offers Women Leaders in FinTech scholarships (50% tuition coverage). Southampton Delhi provides the Cambridge Scholarship Fund and need-based Future Talent Bursaries. Always ask about financial aid.

  • Programme Availability Matters: Not every campus offers every major. IED Mumbai focuses exclusively on design and fashion. Illinois Tech is STEM-heavy. Ensure your chosen field is actually available before applying.

  • Career Support Differentiates: Look beyond the brand name. Deakin’s GIFT City campus has already placed students in paid internships at National Australia Bank’s Innovation Centre, leading to full-time roles. Investigate placement records, industry partnerships, and internship guarantees.

  • Campus Life is Still Emerging: These are new campuses, often in specialised zones like GIFT City or business parks. The vibrant student life of a traditional university town may take time to develop. Ask about extracurriculars, student clubs, and residential facilities.

  • The Post-Study Work Rights Caveat. It is vital to understand that a degree earned entirely on Indian soil does not currently grant eligibility for the UK’s Graduate Route or Australia’s Post-Study Work visas. To unlock international work rights, students must typically utilize a "hybrid" model (e.g., a 2+2 or 1+1 structure) that involves at least one to two years of residency at the home campus abroad.

The Road Ahead

The India–UK Vision 2035 framework has accelerated British university entries, with nine UK institutions receiving approval during an October 2025 trade mission. Australia’s Group of Eight is following suit. American universities, slower to arrive, are now entering through the International Education City in Mumbai.

This is not a fad. It is a structural shift in global higher education. India is no longer just a source market for international students—it is becoming a destination in its own right.

For the Indian student of 2026 and beyond, the question is no longer "Which country should I study in?" It is "Which international university campus in India best fits my ambitions
